Evidence & Context

The mean basal respiration rate for the unburnt, protected woodland was 10.3 mg CO₂-C/kg/day.

Metric Definition:

Basal microbial respiration rate representing the metabolic activity of the soil microbial community under standardized laboratory conditions.

Benchmark Definition:

The benchmark is the mean basal respiration from a long-unburnt, protected dry sclerophyll woodland in South Australia, a high-fidelity proxy for best-available condition in a temperate semi-arid ecosystem.

Justification:

This value reflects a state of ecological integrity where soil organic matter inputs, microbial biomass, and nutrient cycling processes are well-maintained in the absence of major recent disturbances.

Notes

No upper detrimental threshold — higher values are always better up to natural saturation. An upper detrimental threshold is not supported; however, excessively high respiration relative to microbial biomass (a high metabolic quotient, qCO₂) indicates system stress and inefficiency, a state more typical of disturbed systems. Optimal function is characterized by high, stable respiration within a system possessing high organic matter and microbial biomass.
