Soil Moisture
Benchmark Value
Scoring Curve
This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 4 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 3 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context
The lower boundary for maintaining essential ecosystem functions is the derived Lower Critical Threshold of < 4% VWC.
volumetric soil moisture
The absolute minimum soil moisture required to prevent the initiation of catastrophic ecosystem collapse.
Soil moisture is below the ecophysiological limit for keystone species. Prolonged periods at this level are associated with high risk of perennial shrub mortality, loss of landscape function, exposure of fragile Calcarosol soils, and irreversible wind erosion (desertification).
