Litter Cover
Benchmark Value
Scoring Curve
This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context.
Evidence & Context
Guidelines for grazing properties consistently cite a minimum of 70% ground cover as necessary to prevent significant increases in runoff and soil loss on gentle to moderate slopes in temperate regions.
Total ground cover (litter + live plants + rock)
Lower critical threshold for total ground cover necessary to protect soil from erosion on gentle to moderate slopes.
Below this level, erosion risk increases significantly and other vital ecosystem functions dependent on surface cover are likely impaired.
