Water Turbidity
Benchmark Value
Scoring Curve
This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context.
Evidence & Context
At levels above 5 NTU, the first signs of major functional shifts in the invertebrate community can appear, particularly for sensitive species that respire through their skin and are thus vulnerable to smothering.
Water turbidity measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), indicating the clarity of water by quantifying light scattering by suspended materials.
Threshold turbidity level above which significant ecological harm begins for sensitive aquatic invertebrates.
Scientific literature indicates a substantial drop in abundance of sensitive invertebrates above this turbidity level.
