Microbial Respiration
Benchmark Value
Scoring Curve
This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 3 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 2 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context
Low critical thresholds are associated with depleted soil organic carbon (SOC) (e.g., below 2% SOC) and very low MBC (e.g., 140-150 µg C/g soil), compromising essential soil functions.
Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC)
A lower critical threshold of 140 µg/g/h microbial biomass carbon indicates impaired soil function in temperate agricultural soils.
Low MBC values are indicative of a starved microbial population and would correspond to critically low respiration rates.
