Scoring Curve

This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 13 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 12 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context

Based on this analysis, a reference value of approximately 5 NTU is established.

Metric Definition:

Water turbidity as measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), representing the median event-based turbidity concentration during baseflow conditions in a destocked tropical savanna catchment.

Benchmark Definition:

This benchmark represents the median event-based turbidity derived from a 15-year study of an ungrazed headwater catchment in a wet/dry tropical environment, serving as the best available real-world reference for a high-health system where grazing impacts are eliminated.

Justification:

The value was calculated from the median Total Suspended Solids (TSS) event mean concentration of ~20 mg/L using a site-specific regression (TSS=3.9524×NTU) provided in the source thesis by Koci (2020). Confidence is 'Moderate' as the source is a tropical savanna (a strong proxy, but not identical to tropical rainforest) and required a TSS-to-NTU conversion, though the use of a site-specific formula enhances its reliability.

No upper detrimental threshold — higher values are always worse beyond this benchmark. This value is derived from a tropical savanna catchment and serves as a proxy for tropical rainforest conditions.
