Scoring Curve

This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 5 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 4 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context

Based on the evidence, an optimal range for the annual median concentration of water nitrate is proposed as 0.002 to 0.010 mg/L (as N).

Metric Definition:

Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN), which is composed almost entirely of nitrate (NO3−) and nitrite (NO2−) and is the most bioavailable form of nitrogen.

Benchmark Definition:

An optimal ecological range for the annual median concentration of water nitrate.

Justification:

This range is sufficiently above nitrogen limitation to support a healthy, productive forest ecosystem while remaining below the threshold for chronic stress on sensitive tropical aquatic environments.
