The reference value is an inferred range representing the natural spatial and temporal variability of litter cover within a healthy ground layer mosaic. It is derived from data in Prober et al. (2002), which shows that high-quality, little-grazed woodlands maintain >95% total ground cover, dominated by native perennial grasses.
