Form: OptimalRange

Scoring Curve

This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 15 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 14 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context

Proposed Benchmark: 50 – 150 ppm CO2-C (Measured via standardized 24-hour laboratory incubation at optimal temperature and moisture)

Metric Definition:

Soil Microbial Respiration (SMR) is the flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) released from the soil surface as a direct result of the metabolic activity of soil microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and archaea.

Benchmark Definition:

The target state for a pasture in high environmental health, representing a system with a robust and efficient microbial community.

Justification:

The lower bound of 50 ppm is deliberately set above the "Average" and "Below Average" categories in soil health guides... The upper bound of 150 ppm is well within the "High" range (typically 61-170+ ppm) but stops short of the extreme values that might indicate instability.
