Scoring Curve

This curve shows how a field measurement for this indicator would score across all available benchmark forms in this context. The scoring engine uses 6 benchmarks together — the OptimalRange form drives the primary score, while 5 guard(s) constrain the result.

Evidence & Context

The recommended reference value is 0.015 mg/L as N.

Metric Definition:

Water nitrate concentration measured as mg/L of nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N) in freshwater streams.

Benchmark Definition:

Median nitrate concentration in undeveloped upland freshwater catchments representing best available condition for conservation areas.

Justification:

Derived from Queensland Government Water Quality Objectives (WQOs) and corroborated by independent scientific syntheses of pristine catchment data.

Notes

Lower Boundary: A lower critical threshold is not applicable; these oligotrophic, phosphorus-limited ecosystems are naturally low in inorganic nitrogen, and the benchmark itself represents the healthy baseline. Optimal Range: The optimal range is from the baseline (~0.015 mg/L) up to the 80th percentile of reference sites (~0.030 mg/L). Upper Detrimental Threshold: Concentrations persistently above 0.030 mg/L indicate a departure from the natural state. Long-term median concentrations approaching 1.0 mg/L (the chronic toxicity guideline value for 95% species protection per ANZG-deferred guidance) are considered detrimental to aquatic ecosystem health.
