Basal area is the total cross-sectional area of all tree stems in a given area, measured at breast height.
This benchmark defines the lower critical basal area threshold below which the temperate grassy woodland ecosystem loses its woodland character and transitions to derived grassland.
This value is significantly below the basal areas observed in healthy old-growth remnants and represents a critically degraded state.
