Metric Definition:

Basal microbial respiration, the flux of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the soil, quantifying the metabolic activity of the heterotrophic microbial community under standardized laboratory conditions.

Benchmark Definition:

Basal microbial respiration is the rate of CO2 flux from soil microbial activity under controlled conditions in temperate grassy woodlands agricultural cropping systems.

Justification:

Derived from a microbial biomass carbon (MBC) of ~400 mg C/kg soil and an assumed metabolic quotient (qCO2) of 1.0 g CO 2-C/mg MBC/h representing a highly efficient microbial community.
